Things to Do in Anchorage in Winter (Beyond Fur Rondy)

Last Frontier Events|June 20, 2026

If you're coming to Anchorage for Fur Rondy, build in a few more days — the city is a genuine winter playground.

Get outside

Anchorage has a huge network of groomed Nordic ski and fat-bike trails right in town, plus downhill skiing at Alyeska in nearby Girdwood (about 45 minutes south). Ice skating and snowshoeing are easy add-ons.

Chase the aurora

On clear, dark nights you can sometimes catch the Northern Lights from just outside the city lights — though for the real show, the Interior around Fairbanks is the place.

Indoor options

The Anchorage Museum and the Alaska Native Heritage Center are great when you need to warm up, and the food and brewery scene is strong.

Plan with our Fur Rondy guide, browse Southcentral events, and for the lights see our Aurora Season guide.
