The Best Places to See the Northern Lights Near Fairbanks
Fairbanks sits almost directly under the auroral oval, which makes the Interior one of the best places on Earth to catch the Northern Lights. But the city's own glow washes out faint displays — the trick is getting to a dark spot with a clear view north. Here are the local favorites.
Cleary Summit
About 20 miles north of town on the Steese Highway, Cleary Summit is the classic Fairbanks aurora pullout — high, dark, and an easy drive. Several aurora tours stage here.
Murphy Dome
The highest road-accessible point near Fairbanks (~2,900 ft), with a wide-open horizon in every direction. Dress for serious cold — it's exposed and windy.
Chena Hot Springs
Sixty miles northeast of Fairbanks, Chena Hot Springs pairs aurora viewing with a soak in the hot springs and heated viewing spots. A bucket-list combo on a clear night.
Closer-in: Chena Lake & Ester Dome
When you don't want to drive far, both get you away from the worst of the city light for a quick look.
