Fur Rondy + Iditarod: See Both in One Anchorage Trip
Last Frontier Events|June 20, 2026
Here's a travel hack for Alaska's winter: Fur Rondy and the Iditarod ceremonial start happen back-to-back in Anchorage, so you can catch two bucket-list events in one trip.
Why they line up
Fur Rondy runs about ten days in late February, and the Iditarod's ceremonial start is the first Saturday of March in downtown Anchorage — right at the tail end of Rondy. Same city, same weekend.
A sample plan
- Late-Rondy days: sled dog sprints, the Running of the Reindeer, snow sculptures, the carnival.
- First Saturday of March: the Iditarod ceremonial start on 4th Avenue.
- Sunday: drive ~80 minutes north to Willow for the official Iditarod restart.
Book early
This is Anchorage's busiest winter weekend — lodging goes fast. Reserve well ahead.
