Ice Alaska: The Story Behind the World Ice Art Championships
Last Frontier Events|June 20, 2026
The World Ice Art Championships didn't appear overnight — they're the work of Ice Alaska, the nonprofit that made Fairbanks a global ice-carving destination.
From local event to world stage
What began as a regional ice-carving event grew, over the years, into a championship that draws elite carvers from around the world to compete on Fairbanks ice.
Why Fairbanks
Two things make it possible: the exceptionally clear pond ice the area produces, and a deep winter cold that keeps sculptures standing for weeks.
More than a competition
Alongside the elite events, the Ice Park added the kids' ice slides and playground that make it a true community attraction.
See it for yourself via our World Ice Art guide, the visitor guide, and how the sculptures are made.
