The Running of the Reindeer: Fur Rondy's Wildest Tradition
It's exactly what it sounds like: hundreds of people running down a downtown Anchorage street alongside live reindeer. The Running of the Reindeer is Fur Rondy's most gleefully chaotic tradition.
What it is
Inspired by Spain's running of the bulls — but friendlier — runners line up on 4th Avenue and take off as reindeer are released to thunder past them. It's a charity event, costumes are encouraged, and it's become one of Anchorage's signature winter spectacles.
Heats
Runners go in waves, so there's plenty to watch even if you're just spectating. Find a spot along the route early.
Watch or run
Spectating is free along 4th Avenue; running requires registration (proceeds go to charity). Either way, dress warm — it's late February in Anchorage.
