Getting to Salmonfest — and What Else to Do on the Kenai

Last Frontier Events|June 20, 2026

Salmonfest sits about 3.5 hours south of Anchorage — and it's smack in the middle of some of Alaska's best fishing and coastline. Make a full Kenai weekend of it.

Getting there

Drive the Sterling Highway south from Anchorage to Ninilchik (roughly 3.5 hours). It's an easy, scenic run down the Kenai Peninsula.

Add a fishing day

The Kenai is world-famous for salmon and halibut. Book a charter out of Ninilchik, Soldotna, or Homer around the festival.

Detour to Homer

Homer and its iconic Spit are about an hour farther south — a perfect day trip for seafood, art galleries, and the end of the road.

Plan it all with our Salmonfest guide, browse Southcentral events, and read the first-timer's guide.
