Things to Do in Alaska in August 2026

Last Frontier Events|July 13, 2026

August is Alaska summer with the volume still turned up — but you can feel the season starting to lean toward fall. The days are long (though shortening fast), silver salmon are pushing into the bays, the fairs are firing up, the blueberries are ripe, and by the end of the month the first "termination dust" can dust the high peaks. It is one of the best months of the year to be here. Here is what to do.

The fairs get going

Fair season peaks in August. The Tanana Valley State Fair in Fairbanks opens the run in early August, and the big one — the Alaska State Fair in Palmer — opens August 21 and runs through Labor Day. Giant vegetables, national-headliner concerts, cream puffs, livestock barns, and a full carnival. See our full Alaska State Fair 2026 guide to plan a day.

Silver salmon derbies

August is silver (coho) season, and the derbies are a highlight. The Seward Silver Salmon Derby runs August 8–16 on Resurrection Bay — one of the oldest and biggest derbies in the state, with cash prizes and tagged-fish jackpots. Valdez runs its own silvers derby all month, and combat fishing on the Kenai and Kasilof is in full swing. New to it? Start with our Alaska fishing charter guide.

Berry season

Mid-to-late August is prime berry picking — lowbush and highbush blueberries, plus the tail end of the salmonberries and the start of lingonberries. Bring a bucket and bear awareness, and watch for berry-pie and jam contests at the fairs.

Festivals and live music

The music runs right into August. Salmonfest on the Kenai kicks off the month (July 31–August 2), and communities from Talkeetna to Homer keep the summer-festival calendar full. Browse Alaska summer festivals and the top festivals of 2026 for the whole slate.

Wildlife and the outdoors

With salmon in the rivers, the bears are feeding — August is peak viewing at places like Katmai and Brooks Falls. Whales are still working the coast, the trails are dry, and it is the last easy month for high-country hiking before the weather turns. Late in August, darkness finally returns to the Interior and aurora season quietly reopens.
