Things to Do in Alaska in September 2026

Last Frontier Events|July 13, 2026

Ask a lot of Alaskans for their favorite month and plenty will say September. The big summer crowds thin out, the tundra and birch catch fire with color, the Northern Lights return to dark skies, and lodging and tours quietly drop into shoulder-season rates. The weather is a gamble, but the payoff is one of the best months of the year. Here is what to do.

Fall color ignites

September is peak foliage across much of the state. The Interior and the high tundra turn first — often by early September — with Southcentral following mid-to-late month. Denali, Hatcher Pass, and Turnagain Arm are classics. See our Alaska fall foliage guide for exactly when and where.

The aurora comes back

Once real darkness returns, aurora season reopens — and September pairs long-enough nights with still-mild weather, which makes it one of the most comfortable months to catch the lights, especially around Fairbanks. There is often an activity bump around the equinox, too. New to it? Read our aurora photography guide.

Fair season finale

The Alaska State Fair in Palmer runs through Labor Day (September 7) — your last shot at cream puffs and giant cabbages. Over the same weekend, the Kodiak State Fair & Rodeo brings island fair fun. Details in our Alaska fall events guide.

Fishing keeps going

Silver (coho) salmon are still running strong into September, and it is prime time on the Kenai, Kasilof, and Resurrection Bay. See where and when in our silver salmon season guide, and book ahead with the Alaska fishing charter guide.

Wildlife and shoulder-season perks

The moose rut gets going — listen for bulls in the willows — and the last cruises of the year work the coast. With fewer people around and softer prices, September rewards travelers who do not mind a little rain.
