The Matanuska Glacier is one of the few large glaciers in Alaska you can actually drive to and walk on. About two hours east of Palmer and the State Fairgrounds on the Glenn Highway, this 27-mile river of ice spills out of the Chugach Mountains. Access is across private land, and guided treks put you safely out on the ice — a natural add-on to a Mat-Su Valley fair trip.

Getting on the ice
The glacier sits on private land reached from the Glenn Highway near Glacier View. Guided trekking companies provide crampons, helmets, and a route onto the ice — past blue crevasses, meltwater channels, and seracs. No experience is needed for the basic treks; ice-climbing options go further.
A day from the fair
The Glenn Highway drive east from Palmer runs along the Matanuska River with the Chugach rising on the far side. Pair a morning at the Alaska State Fair with an afternoon glacier trek, or make the glacier its own day trip from the valley.
Dress for ice
Even in late summer it's cold and windy on the glacier surface. Bring layers, sturdy waterproof footwear, gloves, and sunglasses — the ice reflects a lot of light. Guides supply traction and safety gear.
Pro tip
Book a guided trek rather than trying to reach the ice on your own — access is across private land and the glacier surface has real hazards. Morning trips often have the calmest weather.
