This Week in Anchorage & Southcentral — Apr 6 to Apr 12
Early April in Alaska is breakup in action. The Nenana Ice Classic is front of mind statewide, and communities along the big river systems — the Susitna, the Matanuska, the Kenai — are watching their own rivers go through the annual freeze-to-flow transition. It's loud, dramatic, and completely Alaskan. The crack of river ice breaking is one of the great seasonal sounds of the north, and early April is when Southcentral residents are most likely to hear it.
Anchorage is fully in spring mode now. The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail is clearing, Earthquake Park is drawing families out for afternoon walks, and the first outdoor events of the year are popping up in parks and plazas. On the Kenai Peninsula, king salmon season is building toward its early-May opener, and sportfishing guides are finalizing their calendars. The Mat-Su Valley still has snow in the mountains, but the Valley floor is green and muddy and thoroughly in spring.
Check out the Southcentral event listings for April 6 through 12 below — a busy week across the region as everyone makes the most of the returning warmth.
Southcentral Alaska stays busy this week (April 6–12) with 33 events across Anchorage, the Mat-Su Valley, and the Kenai Peninsula. Here's what's happening.
