This Week in Juneau & Southeast — Apr 6 to Apr 12

Last Frontier Events|April 6, 2026

April is peak pre-season in Southeast Alaska. The Inside Passage is waking up fast — salmon are beginning to stage in the channels, devil's club and skunk cabbage are emerging on the forest floor, and migratory birds are arriving in force. The first cruise ships of the season are beginning to arrive in Ketchikan and Juneau, and the communities are transitioning from their quieter winter rhythms into full visitor-season mode. It's a genuinely exciting time along the coast.

Juneau is hosting its early-April lineup of arts and outdoor events. The Mendenhall Glacier is drawing visitors to watch the meltwater flows and returning wildlife, and the local hiking trail network is opening up for the season. In Ketchikan, First Friday art walks and community gatherings are marking the return of tourist-season energy. Sitka is welcoming early-season visitors with its acclaimed natural history and birding programming — the spring raptor migration through Sitka Sound is particularly spectacular this time of year.
