This Week in Juneau & Southeast — Jun 1 to Jun 7
June is the crown of Southeast Alaska's summer. The midnight sun isn't quite as extreme on the Inside Passage as it is in the Interior or up on the North Slope, but Juneau is still seeing nearly 18 hours of daylight by the first week of June, and the coastal forests and channels look otherworldly in the long, slanted evening light. This is peak season for everything Southeast offers — whale watching, fishing, cultural events, and hiking — and the entire region is running at full capacity to match the demand.
Juneau's June calendar is one of the busiest of the year. The Sitka Summer Music Festival is in full swing, drawing world-class chamber musicians to Centennial Hall in Sitka for one of Alaska's most acclaimed cultural events. In Juneau, community festivals, waterfront markets, and the city's lively First Friday arts scene are all running. The Mendenhall Glacier area is hosting interpretive programs and ranger-led tours, and whale-watching operators are seeing excellent humpback activity in Stephens Passage. Ketchikan's summer calendar is full of arts, heritage, and outdoor events.
