This Week in Juneau & Southeast — May 4 to May 10

Last Frontier Events|May 4, 2026

Early May is fishing season in Southeast Alaska in full swing. King salmon are in the channels, halibut action is building in Icy Strait and Cross Sound, and sportfishing boats out of every harbor from Ketchikan to Gustavus are fully booked. It's the most anticipated stretch of the fishing calendar for Southeast communities, and the towns that live by the season — Sitka, Petersburg, Wrangell, Ketchikan — are operating at their spring peak. The Inside Passage in May is one of the great fishing destinations anywhere on earth.

Beyond fishing, Southeast's early May calendar is full of community and cultural events. Juneau is hosting its spring arts programming, outdoor concerts, and community gatherings as the city settles into its summer visitor rhythm. The Sitka Summer Music Festival is approaching and early-season cultural events are being announced, while Haines is gearing up for its spring events on the Chilkat River flats — a prime brown bear and eagle viewing area that comes alive as the salmon begin to move. Skagway's summer season is officially underway, with the White Pass railroad operating again for the season.
