This Week in Juneau & Southeast — May 18 to May 24

Last Frontier Events|May 18, 2026

Late May in Southeast Alaska is high season in every sense. The cruise ships are on full schedule, the fishing is exceptional across species, and the days are long enough that evening whale-watching tours are returning to the dock in full daylight at 9 pm. Southeast communities are running at capacity — restaurants, gear shops, charter operators, and tour guides are all fully staffed and fully booked. It's the peak of the Inside Passage's natural and community calendar.

Juneau's late-May calendar is packed with summer events. The downtown waterfront hosts live music and community gatherings on weekends, the Mendenhall Glacier is drawing record visitor numbers to its newly reconfigured interpretive site, and the trail systems above town are busy from early morning until late evening. Sitka is deep into its summer cultural and music programming, with events at Sheldon Jackson Museum and the various venues around town drawing a mix of locals and visitors. Haines and Skagway are running their summer history and outdoor tours in full gear.
