This Week in Juneau & Southeast — May 25 to May 31
Memorial Day weekend kicks off the peak of Southeast Alaska's summer season. Juneau, Ketchikan, and Sitka are all in full visitor-season operation, and the Inside Passage communities are hosting the kinds of community festivals and outdoor events that define summer in coastal Alaska. The days are as long as they're going to get — twilight at 11 pm, first light before 4 am — and the energy that comes with that endless daylight is unmistakable all the way through the holiday weekend.
Juneau is pulling out all the stops for Memorial Day weekend. Community events, outdoor concerts, and the city's summer arts programming are all running at full capacity. The Taku Glacier and Mendenhall trails are packed, and the whale-watching boats in Auke Bay are running multiple trips per day to meet demand. In Sitka, the Sitka Summer Music Festival kickoff is approaching, and the pre-festival concert series is drawing audiences to Centennial Hall. Ketchikan's Totem Heritage Center and Creek Street are central to a full community summer calendar.
