This Week in Juneau & Southeast — May 11 to May 17
Mid-May in Southeast Alaska is when the summer season gets fully real. Cruise ships are calling multiple times a week in Juneau and Ketchikan, the fishing is excellent, and the days are long enough that the forests and channels glow with a particular green-gold light in the evenings. The Inside Passage is at its absolute most beautiful in mid-May — before the summer tourist volumes fully peak, the wildlife is active and visible, and the weather windows are reliably good.
Juneau is hosting a full week of community events, live music, and outdoor programming. The Mount Roberts Tramway is fully operational, whale-watching tours are seeing consistent humpback activity in Auke Bay, and the local food and arts scene is in full summer form. Sitka is approaching its celebrated Sitka Summer Music Festival season with pre-festival events and community concerts. Wrangell and Petersburg are hosting their own community calendars, and the smaller communities of Prince of Wales Island are welcoming the first summer visitors.
