This Week in Anchorage & Southcentral — May 4 to May 10
Early May in Alaska is all about the king salmon opener on the Kenai River and the general acceleration of everything outdoor. Fishing, hiking, paddling, cycling — after months of waiting, Alaskans are doing all of it at once. Daylight is now approaching 17 hours across Southcentral, evenings are warm and golden, and the community event calendar reflects the energy of a population that has been cooped up since October and is making up for every lost day.
Anchorage is in peak spring form — the hillside trails above the city are open, the farmers market season is underway at downtown's Saturday Market, and outdoor entertainment venues are booking their first shows. On the Kenai Peninsula, every campsite near the river is filling up, and Homer's fishing scene is wide open for halibut. Talkeetna is hosting its spring Wilderness Women and outdoor culture events as the shoulder season between ski and summer brings a particular kind of festive energy to the small town.
Check the Southcentral listings below for all events happening May 4 through 10 — a fantastic week to be in the region with the full Alaska spring in swing.
Southcentral Alaska stays busy this week (May 4–10) with 17 events across Anchorage, the Mat-Su Valley, and the Kenai Peninsula. Here's what's happening.
