This Week in Juneau & Southeast — Mar 30 to Apr 5

Last Frontier Events|March 30, 2026

Late March and early April in Southeast Alaska bring a reliable early spring that the rest of the state won't see for another month. The temperate rainforest is greening up along the lower elevations of the Inside Passage, herring runs are beginning to pulse through the channels, and Steller sea lions, orcas, and humpbacks are following the bait fish north through Frederick Sound and Chatham Strait. It's one of the best wildlife-watching windows of the entire year.

Southeast communities are active with the transition energy of early spring. Juneau is hosting community events and cultural programming at its arts venues, while the Douglas waterfront and Mendenhall Valley trails are drawing hikers now that conditions have improved. Sitka's spring lineup of natural history talks and cultural events is drawing visitors interested in the town's Russian-American heritage and remarkable setting. Ketchikan's Creek Street is busy with the advance guard of the summer cruise season, with the first ships arriving earlier each year.
