This Week in Anchorage & Southcentral — Apr 27 to May 3
The very end of April and the first days of May mark Alaska's true seasonal turning point. Fishing seasons are opening up across Southcentral, the mountains above Anchorage still hold their white caps but the valleys are bright green, and the days are now longer than 16 hours. This is the Alaska that people move here for, and the last week of April into early May is one of the best stretches of weather and energy in the whole calendar year.
Southcentral is buzzing. The Kenai River king salmon opener draws thousands of anglers to the banks — this is one of the most famous sportfishing events in North America, and it brings communities on the Peninsula to life. Anchorage is hosting outdoor concerts, community markets, and the first wave of summer outdoor events. Mat-Su Valley is in full spring bloom, with the Talkeetna area especially lively as climbers and guided expeditions head for Denali base camp via Talkeetna Air Taxi.
