This Week in Juneau & Southeast — Apr 27 to May 3
The last days of April and the first days of May bring Southeast Alaska to full early-summer life. Salmon seasons are opening up, halibut charters are booking solid, and the Inside Passage is alive with fishing activity from Dixon Entrance north to Icy Strait. On land, the forest floor is thick with fiddlehead ferns and flowering plants, and the bear trails on the hillsides above Juneau and Sitka are showing plenty of fresh activity as the coastal brown bears emerge and head for the beaches.
Southeast communities are in peak community-event season. Juneau's arts and music scene is busy, the Perseverance Theatre is closing its spring season with a run of final performances, and the Saturday markets and outdoor events that define the summer calendar are getting underway. Sitka is hosting natural history lectures, cultural programming, and outdoor guided experiences as its world-class setting draws early visitors. Petersburg's Little Norway Festival — a beloved annual celebration of the community's Scandinavian heritage — typically falls in this window and fills the town with music, food, and festivities.
