The Fur Rondy Outhouse Races are exactly what they sound like: teams push decorated outhouses on wheels — complete with a rider inside — through a downtown Anchorage course in a timed race. The outhouse designs range from elaborate to hilarious, the competition is fierce, and the event is one of the most gleefully absurdist winter traditions in Alaska. There's a reason people return to Fur Rondy year after year.

How it works

Each team builds a themed outhouse mounted on runners or wheels. A rider sits inside while the rest of the team pushes the outhouse through a course as fast as possible. Outhouse design, speed, and crowd appeal are all part of the event. The fastest time wins; the best costume wins separately.

The outhouse designs

Teams go all-out on themes — past outhouses have been decorated as log cabins, spaceships, political satire, local landmarks, and Alaska wildlife. The creativity is part of the draw; spectators vote for favorites with their cheers.

Where to watch

The course runs through a defined section of downtown Anchorage — lined with spectators who cheer, heckle (warmly), and photograph the outhouses. It's a great family event with genuine laugh-out-loud moments.

Pro tip

Bring your camera — the outhouse designs photograph well, and the mid-race chaos creates some memorable images. Kids especially love this event.
