World Championship Sled Dog Sprint

Elite sprint mushing through downtown Anchorage — the fastest dogs on the planet

When

Multiple heats during Rondy week

Where

Downtown Anchorage streets

Format

Sprint (speed), not distance

Dogs

Fast-twitch sprint breeds (not Iditarod huskies)

The Open World Championship Sled Dog Sprint Race is the centerpiece mushing event of Fur Rondy — elite sprint teams tearing through downtown Anchorage at full speed across multiple heats and days. Unlike the Iditarod's long-distance endurance format, sprint mushing is all speed: shorter distances, maximum pace, specialized shorter-coated dogs bred for power and quickness. The course runs through Anchorage streets within view of thousands of spectators.

Sprint vs distance mushing

The Iditarod and sprint mushing are completely different sports. Sprint dogs are bred for power and speed over short distances — often Alaskan huskies crossed with greyhounds or other fast breeds. Iditarod dogs are built for endurance over 1,000 miles of terrain. You can watch one event in the morning and attend Iditarod ceremonies the same week.

The course

The sprint course runs through downtown Anchorage city streets — teams explode off the starting line at full speed and tear through a relatively short course while spectators watch from sidewalks and designated viewing areas. Multiple heats across multiple days decide the champion.

Why it matters

The World Championship Sled Dog Sprint is one of the oldest and most prestigious sprint mushing events in the world. For competitive mushers, winning it carries enormous prestige — it predates the Iditarod by decades.

Pro tip

Position yourself near the start line for the initial explosion of speed — teams accelerate from a standstill to full sprint in seconds, and that moment is spectacular to witness up close.
