Running of the Reindeer

Costumed runners sprint down 4th Avenue alongside live reindeer — Rondy's wildest spectacle

When

Late February during Fur Rondy week

Where

4th Avenue, downtown Anchorage

Entry

Runners pay entry; spectating free

Costume

Required for runners

The Running of the Reindeer is Fur Rondy's most famous — and most chaotic — event. Hundreds of costumed participants sprint down 4th Avenue in downtown Anchorage alongside actual live reindeer. The costumes range from elaborate to absurd, the reindeer are reliably unpredictable, and the crowd that lines the avenue for blocks makes it one of the most photographed events of the Alaska winter. Proceeds benefit charity.

How it works

Runners register and line up on 4th Avenue in costume. When the reindeer are released, runners sprint the same course — the goal is simply to finish without getting knocked over by a 300-lb caribou moving at speed. The reindeer handlers keep things (mostly) controlled.

The costumes

Costume creativity is half the event — past participants have dressed as elves, vegetables, superheroes, historical figures, and increasingly elaborate Alaska-themed characters. The spectator crowd rewards great costumes with cheers. Some participants run multiple heats.

Where to watch

The best spectating is along 4th Avenue close to the finish line — you can see the full field coming down the avenue with the reindeer in and around them. Arrive 30 minutes early for a good spot along the barriers. The crowd energy is infectious.

Pro tip

Dress warmly — it's late-February Anchorage, and you'll be standing outside watching multiple heats. The entertainment value is high; the temperatures are low.
