Kaltag in the race

Kaltag is a pivotal point: teams leave the Yukon here and cross the historic Kaltag Portage — an old trade and mail route — over to the Bering Sea coast at Unalakleet.

Mile markers are approximate and shift with the year's route. Kaltag sits on the interior leg of the 2027 southern route.

Background

History

An Athabascan village and ancient crossroads — the Kaltag Portage has linked the Yukon to the Bering Sea coast for trade and mail for generations.
